Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
