EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
