Entire Career of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Wealthiest 10%, Report Finds

Based on fresh research, the typical earner in the UK would need over five decades of salary to reach the net worth of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Widening Economic Disparity Through the Years

This research reviewed net worth information covering the recent health crisis years and found that back in 2006-08, it would have needed 38 years of average worker salary to reach the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A senior economist part of the analysis commented: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary throughout their career would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The analysis discovered that the gap between the wealth of the average person and a person belonging to the top 10% was £1 million in the pre-crisis period, but had increased to £1.3m in inflation-adjusted terms by recent times.

The analyst added: "These disparities are doubly concerning as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the wealth gap expanding in specific figures, the share of overall assets in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," according to the study.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the annual GDP, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Financial Divide

Termed "unearned" appreciation, via rising house prices and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the study.

These gains generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Generational Financial Divides

The typical financial disparity between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in pre-financial crisis, to £310,000.

Geographic Differences

Additionally, there were pronounced area-based disparities, with the average level of wealth in recent years standing at £290,000 in the SE of England, where housing costs have tended to rise rapidly, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

COVID Era Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when countless laborers were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate numerous families were able to save, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, though. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their available funds increase by £4,200," the report finds.
