Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of the former president's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
