Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
