Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
