Roughly 35,000 individuals might be compromised, alerts the US embassy

A major security compromise in the Federal Republic of Somalia's digital visa application system could have revealed personal information associated with numerous thousands of travelers, comprising American nationals, the American embassy in Somalia has cautioned.

Officials stated obtained trustworthy accounts that "anonymous digital intruders" compromised the Somali government's digital visa application portal, potentially compromising data from at least 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files distributed through digital channels include names, images, dates of birth, marital status, home addresses and email information, per a United States official announcement released on recently.

"This security incident is ongoing and potentially disclose any sensitive details you enter into this platform," United Kingdom officials has also warned visitors.

"Assess the potential threats before applying for a digital visa required for travel to the Somali nation."

Government Response

Government officials have remained silent about the security compromise. But authorities has transferred its visa service away from the initial application portal to the new application website, without providing an official explanation.

"While the US Embassy in Mogadishu lacks the capacity to validate whether an individual's data belongs to the security incident, individuals who have applied through the electronic visa system might be compromised," the official communication stated.

Territorial Consequences

Somalia's new system mandates every visitor, comprising individuals from the independently governed area of the northern territory and the self-governing territory of the northeastern region, to apply for entry visas via electronic platforms.

Opponents claim visitors have encountered additional charges in specific areas, amounting to duplicate payments.

Regional Dynamics

The northern territory, that proclaimed statehood in 1991, administers its affairs via separate governmental bodies yet hasn't received global recognition. Somalia insists that the area continues to belong to its jurisdictional area.

The claimed security incident adds to long-running tensions concerning Somali federal authorities and northern authorities regarding authority over aviation space. Even though Somalia re-established complete authority of national aviation space in 2017, Somaliland continues to contest the current system.

Recent Escalation

The dispute worsened in recent days after the northern region's leader the Somaliland president stated the breakaway region would not accept Mogadishu's electronic visa and instructed that aviation companies are required to secure permission from northern authorities when approaching its airspace.

However leading carriers have declined to board passengers lacking Somalia's e-visa approval.

Recently, the northern region's top diplomat Abdirahman Dahir Aadan reiterated that "every person entering Somaliland should receive travel authorization on arrival", stating Mogadishu's digital application process was not safe and cautioning that "individual details can fall into radical elements" due to utilizing the system.

Passenger Complications

The stand-off has resulted in some travellers traveling to the northern region unable to board flights after being denied boarding for lacking the federal electronic visa.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, the aviation minister, has told news organizations that the regulations - first announced earlier this year - came into effect on the tenth of November.

He said airlines that do not comply would be instructed to divert, and claimed multiple planes had been forced to change paths.

Airspace Control Conflict

Footage released by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority appears to show territorial flight directors giving directions to international pilots - an action applauded locally as an assertion of northern self-governance.

Nevertheless Mogadishu's air transport department maintains it retains exclusive regulatory authority regarding the federal aviation control area (aviation control zone), which covers the entire country's aviation space. Officials have directed every plane to ignore any instructions coming from authorities other than central government.

Officials cautioned that ignoring national and worldwide air transport standards could pose safety risks and cause "serious legal consequences".
